Twenty years after it opened as a way to avoid the requirements of US law, Guantanamo continues to hold 39 Muslim men, most without charge, none having received a fair trial. The existence of an offshore prison for Muslim men who are denied due process of law is a blatant example and encouragement of Islamophobia and racism. Guantanamo is a stain on the human rights record of the United States. The continued existence of Guantanamo and indefinite detention severely undermines the United States’ credibility as an advocate for human rights globally. The United States must reckon with its post-9/11 human rights abuses, and that must include closing Guantanamo. Indefinite detention without charge or fair trial is a blatant violation of international human rights. The Guantanamo military commissions have failed to bring justice to the victims and survivors of the 9/11 attacks, while denying due process to the accused. You can also Tweet at @POTUS and @SecBlinken on January 11 to urge them to close Guantanamo and transfer all detainees not charged with crimes. Tell them it is time to #CloseGuantanamo! Please join us for the monthly virtual meeting of Amnesty International-Bay Area (Houston): Monday, November 7, 2022 at 6:15 PM (Central). All across the world, people are standing up for their rights: brave human rights defenders in Iran, France, the U.S., and beyond.Amnesty staff and members have been hard at work: speaking out to end the death penalty, demanding safe haven for refugees and asylum-seekers, and ensuring war crimes in Ukraine are meticulously documented. These are just a few of the big steps forward, made possible because of your support! So please keep up the momentum by taking the below action by sending the below letter and make a phone call to your senator today; https://act.amnestyusa.org/page/66409/action/1?val Then call your Senator at 1-202-224-3121 Here is the recommended script. You can paraphrase, but please be polite; "Please also support the Break the Cycle of Violence Act (S.2275) which provides funding for community violence intervention programs and job training programs for young people." Thank you and please stay safe! ___________________________________ Call now to ban deadly weapons! PLEASE CALL YOUR SENATORS; Sen. John Cornyn: 202-224-2934 Sen. Ted Cruz: 202-224-5922 You can paraphrase into your own words (brevity is always good!) but please be polite! "As your constituent, I ask that you urgently support the Assault Weapons Ban of 2022 (S736). Assault weapons were designed to kill and maim as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time possible, and yet there is currently no federal law regulating them. Gun violence in the U.S. is already a human rights crisis. The least we can do is to stop the most deadly weapons -- and the ammunition that acts as a force-multiplier -- from being easily accessible. On behalf of our state and community, please vote ‘yes’ on the Assault Weapons Ban of 2021 and ensure that this legislation is brought to the floor." _____________________________________________________ Amnesty International-Bay Area (Houston): ”Human Trafficking in Houston”.
